Delta Airlines and Coca-Cola have apologized for their…. Napkins.
Yep, napkins. The napkins that were handed out encouraged passengers to reach out to their ‘plane crushes’.
“because you’re on a plane full of interesting people and hey … you never know,” the front of the napkin provokes.
The back of the napkin has a place to write your name and phone number down, and then in small print, goes on to suggest, “be a little old school. write down your number & give it to your plane crush. you never know…”
Some passengers found it funny. Some people said they loved them and thought it was neat. Other passengers were not impressed, saying they found the napkins “creepy”.
In the end, the flirtatious marketing attempt fizzled out. Coca-Cola said they sincerely apologize to anyone they may have offended. “We worked with our partners at Delta to begin removing the napkins last month and are replacing them with other designs.” Delta also apologized, saying they rotate Coke products regularly as part of their brand partnership but “missed the mark with this one…” “We are sorry for that.”
If these were supposed to be a timely and clever bit for the upcoming Valentine’s Day holiday, it’s fair to say… OOPS! Delta gets people to where they need to go. Coke quenches people’s thirst. Matchmakers they are not. But good try?!
