Grammys 2019: Some Highlights

This year’s Grammy Awards had plenty of surprises, performances, tributes, emotional moments, great moments, awkward moments, memorable moments, and not-so-memorable moments. Whew! There was a lot going on.

The show kicked off with a surprise appearance from former First Lady Michelle Obama, which or course the audience was absolutely thrilled about! Host Alicia Keys also brought her other ‘sisters’ on stage: Lady Gagy, Jada Pinkett and J Lo.

Bay Area’s own H.E.R. was in the building! She took the stage to perform her song “Hard Place” and she also won two awards, including best R&B album.

Childish Gambino (Donald Glover), although not present to accept the awards, made history by winning Record of the Year and Song of the Year for a hip-hop song. He won four awards total.

Ariana Grande, not in attendance, won her first Grammy, best pop vocals for “Sweetener”.

Dave Chappelle won Best Comedy Album for “Equanimity & the Bird Revelation”.

There was a Dolly Parton tribute, which included Katy Perry, Kacey Musgraves, Miley Cyrus, Little Big Town, Maren Morris… and Dolly Parton herself!

Alicia Keys did a piano (two pianos) medley. If anyone needed a reminder of what a great musician she is, well this was a good reminder.

Janelle Monae brought the energy! She was on point and on fire as usual. Her performance was filled with so much goodness, oh, and also…. a certain type of pants. Her dancers entered the stage at one point, with the definitely-not-subtle pants from her ‘Pynk’ video. We get it Janelle!

Cardi B. killed it! Periodt (yes, that ‘t’ is intentional). She also became the first solo woman to win best rap album.

Diana Ross’ super cute 9 year-old grandson introduced her before she graced the stage.

Lady Gaga did her thing, and did it well!

Teenage sibling due Chloe x Halle paid tribute to the late Donny Hathaway during a stripped-down version of “Where is the Love”. Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack had a hit with this song in 1972. Chloe x Halle’s vocals! Yes!

There were so many other performers, including: St. Vincent and Dua Lipa, Yolanda Adams, Fantasia, Andra Day, Travis Scott, Brandi Carlile, Camila Cabello, Post Malone and Red Hot Chili Peppers, Shawn Mendes, Miley Cyrus, and Jennifer Lopez. Jennifer Lopez was tasked to lead the Motown tribute and there were plenty of opinions about that………
