Cicely Tyson, at 93 years old, makes history as the first black woman to receive an Honorary Oscar. She’ll be recognized along with Composer Lalo Schifrin and publicist Marvin Levy.
Cicely was raised in Harlem and began her career as a model and theatre actor. She appeared on Broadway and Off-Broadway. Some of her notable film credits include The River Niger, Fried Green Tomatoes, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, The Help, Alex Cross, Last Flag Flying, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, and Sounder.
“Choosing the honorees for its awards each year is the happiest of all the Board of Governors’ work,” Academy President John Bailey said in a statement.
Lots of her famous friends have been congratulating her via Instagram and twitter since the news broke. As noted in People.com: Honorary Oscar for Cicely Tyson
