Oakland city Council unanimously passed a resolution on Tuesday night to name a street near the Fruitvale BART station, ‘Oscar Grant Way’.
The street name is in honor of Oscar Grant who at 22 years old, was fatally shot by a BART police officer on New Year’s Day in 2009. Oscar was shot in the back while he was handcuffed and face down. He was rushed to Highland hospital but did not survive his injuries. Multiple videos capturing the shooting from various angles quickly spread on social media and to news outlets, sparking public outrage. The officer claims he thought he had reached for his taser but accidentally grabbed his gun instead. The officer, Johannes Mehserle, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter.
January 1st of this year marked the 10-year anniversary of Oscar’s death. RIP Oscar Grant. Oakland loves you!
